Dearest MENTAL Soul people,
It's MENTAL time again! Autumn is upon us and after an extended five month summer break London's premier Modern Soul & Crossover night returns this Saturday 25th October 2008 with resident MENTAL DJs Gareth "Girth Devon" Donovan, Mole and me, Niki Golding joined by our dear friend Terry Jones, the celestial messenger, returning for his annual guest spot. Fresh from his 2008 Celebrity World Tour of Europe, Terry "If it's Saturday, it must be Frankfurt" Jones remains one of the most indemand and influential DJs on the current soul scene. Just Google "VILLAGE SOUL" to see what all the fuss is about, or better yet jump on a tube down to The Monument this Saturday and hear for yourself.
Now you may have heard whispers about MonuMENTAL Soul closing its doors, and it is true that we had been seriously considering this, simply because we haven't been devoting as much time to MonuMENTAL things as we should. However, after much deliberation we decided to shift our backsides into gear and come back strong this autumn. We have made a couple of small changes: Firstly, instead of our rather random date schedule MonuMENTAL will be happening on the last Saturday of every other month starting from January 2009. Five of the six dates will be at The Britannia plus a summer special alldayer in Essex in July (honest this time!). Secondly, we will be reducing our entrance charge to £5 for those who arrive before 10pm. We will be announcing our 2009 DJ line up before the next MonuMENTAL "The Christmas Cracker" happening on Saturday 27th December 2008. (NB: NOT New Year's Eve this year).
That's about it for now, except to say your resident MENTAL DJs are as ever Gareth "Girth Devon" Donovan, Mole and me, Niki Golding. We will be spinning a selection of funky floor-fillers, modern soul anthems, lesser known 60s & 70s, ultra rare crossover and a smattering of new SOUL releases.... something for EVERYONE! The very best in QUALITY SOUL old and new. A night of great soul music and great company at a great venue, with a wooden floor made for dancing and our legendary pub priced beer and draught bitter.
Currently the longest running Modern Soul event in London. Soon to be entering our sixth MonuMENTAL year!

at 21:32:1 Monday October 20 2008Soul singer Dee Dee Warwick, who herself was a highly accomplished soul singer who gained acclaim both solo as well as with her sister Dionne, has died at the age of 63 after being in poor health for months. Warwick died Saturday at a nursing home in Essex County, said Kevin Sasaki, a family spokesman. She had been in failing health in recent months, he said, and her sister was with her when she died. Warwick had several hits on the soul and R&B charts in the 1960s and 70s, including "Foolish Fool," "She Didn't Know (She Kept on Talking)" and a version of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" that was later covered by Diana Ross and The Supremes. Warwick also was a two-time Grammy Award nominee and sang backup for Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and others before starting her solo career. Warwick was the niece of gospel singer Cissy Houston and a cousin of Whitney Houston. Born in Newark, Warwick was a teenager when she began singing with her older sister in the late 1950s. The two performed as The Gospelaires and also collaborated and sang with the Drinkard Singers, a long-running gospel group that also featured some of the Warwicks' aunts and uncles and was managed by their mother. Most recently, Warwick provided background vocals for her sister's recent one-woman autobiographical show, "My Music & Me," which played to sold-out crowds in Europe this year. She also performed on the title song from Dionne Warwick's gospel album, "Why We Sing," released January 2008.

R.I.P Levi Stubbs The performer, who had suffered ill-health for several years, passed away in his sleep. Abdul Fakir is the only surviving original member of the group, which has sold more than 50m records.The Detroit band became one of Motown Records' biggest successes, scoring hits including Bernadette and Reach Out (I'll Be There). Founding members Lawrence Payton and Obie Benson died in 1997 and 2005 respectively. Audley Smith, of the Motown Historical Museum, said that Levi Stubbs had a voice as unique as Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson or Stevie Wonder. "[He]fits right up there with all the icons of Motown," he said.Levi Stubbs was born in 1936 in Detroit and met Abdul "Duke" Fakir at High School. They met Payton and Benson while singing at a mutual friend's birthday party. In 1953, they formed a group called The Four Aims and signed a deal with Chess Records. Later they changed their names to the Four Tops to avoid being confused with the Ames Brothers. The group signed with Motown Records in 1963 and produced 20 Top-40 hits over the following 10 years, making music history with other acts in Berry Gordy's Motown stable. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Stubbs is survived by his wife Clineice, five children and 11 grandchildren. God bless

I have memories that I will continue to cherish until its my turn to take the trip upstairs myself albeit a while off yet. But think of this. 17 2008Just recieved an email from the states :Levi Stubbs, the legendary lead singer of the Four Tops, and one of the greatest soul vocalists of all time, has died in Detroit after a long illness. Stubbs' death leaves only one remaining Tops founding member, Abdul "Duke" Fakir. As the distinctive lead of the Four Tops, Stubbs was best known for his deep, passionate vocal style that turned Holland-Dozier-Holland compositions like "Bernadette" and "Reach Out" and later, upon the group's move from Motown to ABC Records, on adult soul songs such as "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I Got)" and "Keeper of the Castle." Stubbs also took a comical turn, playing the voice of Audrey II in the movie version of the musical Little Shop of Horrors. A heart attack and stroke permanently sidelined Stubbs a half decade ago, and he was wheelchair-bound as he took the stage for the group's 50th anniversary celebration in 2005. But Levi Stubbs will long be remembered as a staple of Motown's greatest years and as one of the most distinctive and revered vocalists of all time. He will be greatly missed.

Smudger said he had words with a member of staff who asked smudger not to shout or be noisey and smudge said it was in the afternoon and smudge said I told that member of staff to " fuck off" Dave got very annoyed and was shouting at smudger about " Who the fuck are you swearing at members of staff of the Hotel, without this hotel we have not got a event" other words were said that would not be relevent or needed as they were words of an heated argument! I must point out that alcohol was a major part in this argument and on clearer heads may have turned differently! Smudge you should not have told the staff to FO and Dave you should have done it in private! NOW PLEASE PUT THIS SHIT TO BED!

Too be brutally frank it's got nothing to do with any scene or music, soul or otherwise.SE1 is an awful club always has been. It was raided a few weeks back shame the brave Police didn't raid it when they could've found more than the 20odd pills a few grams of coke they did find. I've stopped going to big clubs in London for a few years now. I'd rather frequent places like Soulful beats and Soul City(Orig soul city not RD's)I'm gutted for Bobby and Steve that it happened at their night cos they do try to promote a good night and it's no reflection of them. Now who ever X is should refrain from posting shit malicious rumours on message boards.

Smudger, it started by him pestering the life out of me to play at SOUL IN THE CITY, after months of ear bashing i gave in and let him play, his set was OK, but my other residents ended up playing last and were not happy, plus the music was a bit all over the place, but no harm done, then he comes over to me with his hand out for payment, for a set that i never wanted him to play, nor needed and had i asked him to play then i would have payed him, but when you badger some one to let you play then ask for money in my eyes is taking the piss, so he then says he wants his money back for MED SOUL as he won't go, fine gave him back his money end of, but no then he wants to go again, so money comes back, next he isn't going again because now his Brother wants to share a room with his girlfriend not Smudger, so money goes back, then what a surprise he is going again, then again he is not going as fallen out with his brother again who lent him some money and Smudgier threw it back at him, then last minute he is going again and is staying for 13 nights as some of us were staying longer, gets out there and then he wants Viky to book him a flight to go home Tuesday with every one else,as his brother is with his girlfriend, no crime there eh ! so done, next this year the town hall have the arse with the various music events going on in Spain as youngsters cause trouble so the beach bar said we had to keep the music volume down as to not piss off the town hall in LLORET , low and behold Smudger is playing on the beach bar and 4 times the bar owner tells him to turn it down, to which Smudgers reply was GET THIS PRICK OUT OF MY FACE and kept the volume up, next thing police turn up and stop the music, last year it was the same deal, but the djs kept it at a reasonable level so we had no trouble, next year the bar will have a permit so we won't have this problem again, back at hotel Smudger boasts how he told the hotel staff to fuck off after being told not to shout at the pool, so i had enough of this big mouth and told him to fuck off, all this was in front of JESTER, LITTLE STEVIE, MARKY MARK etc, i walked off and sat down away from him to cool off when i looked up he is making a wanker sign and Rip's off his MED SOUL wrist and and throws it on the floor, so fine our paths will not cross again, i say he has no balls because he knows where i live and can't come and face me, but puts shit up on this site as his little childish protest. POINT 2 customers Doody who every one knows has a big mouth, iwas asked to keep the voice down as we were outside by the pool and 3000 other customers of the hotel don't want to hear "where the fuck were you lot etc" at 5.30 in the morning, plus it is a family hotel so a bit of respect needed,so she took off her wrist band,to show he won't be told what to do, next SHELLY another customer, i asked her if she could find Tracy in the club for me or keep an eye on Jasmin, Tracy's 15 year old daughter while i found her as her daughter turned up at the club with a girl mate of 14 both with there tits on show as they were wearing wet t shirts after being at a foam party, with them some 19year old drug head, so now he was told to get lost, the girls came in the club to safety and what was my reward from Tracy's best friend "i am a wanker and some one Else's kids are not her problem, then the next day i hear Tracy is shit stirring saying i am calling all my punters CUNTS, so enough now,next year no one under 18 in the club end of, now MED SOUL was great,plus a lot have re booked already, but a few rotten apples need to be thrown away to not spoil it for the rest, next year a manager will handle the shit because if people talk to me with disrespect then it will be returned, this subject can now be laid to rest as it is getting boring now.

Rainham Dave and Viki work very hard to try too put gigs on, and as he is putting his own money into gigs surely he is entitled to make a profit of some sort. Ive had my arguments with Dave, and with yourself, but as all mates should we sit down and sort things out, and i would like too think you and dave could do the same. I think you are lowering yourself to the level of a minion by shouting abuse at RD when you could have simply typed that Dave is rude or aggressive towards the paying customer and he lacks social skills but as we all know Dave has a caveman attitude towards customer service and will probably be the end of his own good event but I have since spoke to Dave and has promised that he will take a backstage part in any further Medsouls and there will a representative who is used to dealing with humans to handle any unfortunate circumstances! SHEP, you don't travel very much do you. Its no secret that you can go to Tobago for £700....in the rainy season!! With all the news about hurricanes in the Dominican Republic, its shouldn't really a surprise, should it? Try looking for a holiday in Tobago in the dry season (Jan - June) and see the prices then. Sounds to me like somebodies getting worried about how the Tobago thing may effect their gig. So much for working together so everyone has as much choice as possible. Anyway happy days
