There have been reports of an outbreak of 'purple tongue' in East Anglia. Symptoms include exhaustion, sore throats and tinnitus. The disease has mostly been limited to sheep and other cases with a cheese intolerance have migrated elswhere thus avoiding exposure. A source said today; Purple tongue is a relatively harmless ailment but we believe the cheese issue is being exacerbated by cases of 'brown tongue'

It could be that the video was not made untill 1984 in that case. The video features the "Jazz Dance" edit featuring Robert Wyatt and Tracey Thorn on vocals, not the later LP version featuring Juliet Roberts. The copyright is most likely held by Virgin Music who were the label that "Working Week" were recording with at that juncture. The video features the "IDJ" dancers dancing down a tall white stair case in tailed dinner jackets in a take of the Nichalas Bros from the last scene in "Stormy Weather" cir 1943. I've tried searching on You Tube, but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers D'Arcy

We warmly welcome the illustrious Mr. Jordi Ripolles as our special guest DJ for what is his MonuMENTAL debut and (we believe) his first time DJing down in't Big Smoke. by car, Monument Street is just off King William St/London Bridge and Lower
Thames Street. There is plenty of free street parking close to the venue....PARKING

Monument, has now been made into a pedestrian zone. Access into Monument Street
via Lower Thames Street has also been blocked. To access parking in Monument
Street you must now enter via Eastcheap then down Pudding Lane or Botolph Lane.

just letting you know how we are doing, elephant & donkey been going at it today, managed 60 feet by 4pm, i'm now tunneling horizontaly, its hard but the goali is caister, managed to rig up a drip tray to catch the sweat for water, but seem to get pissed drinking it, "I WONDER WHY",
we all tunneled together this afternoon,and beleive me when your in a tight

A huge congratulations to everybody that made it to Med Soul. We came, we saw, and we played and danced our little hearts out !!! What a vibe, if you could just bottle that, we'd all make a fortune. Seriously, I'd like to say many thanks to all of you for making a great holiday. You guys have got to be the best ever. So many great memories......from Steve bustin' the croc in the pool (lol), to being able to help the young lad out who's stuff got nicked. If this holiday was all about that real "family" vibe, then this holiday had it by the bucket full. To all the Dj's I had the pleasure of playing alongside........it was an absolute pleasure to meet you all, and to hear your great sets, both at the beach and at the club(s). You guys did a superb job on some equipment that wasn't always up to the task, but you'd never have known it. To all the people we had the pleasure of playing to, thanks for making our job, one of the easiest in the world. This feeling will stay with me well into the winter months. Love Y'all. XXXX

Wow, what a write up. Viky and I are humbled by it all, never in my life have I had such a great time with so many great people, djs and punters alike, respect to you guys and girls. I laughed so much my ribs hurt, even the town hall of Lloret De Mar paid respect to us by not closing the beach party(as they do that all the time) , the crowd and the DJS you were fantastic, take a big bow people. So many great moments I can’t name them all, but how many times do you see a naked man dancing on a trampoline being towed along by a catamaran in the sea, or a dj ( Jim the Thong) playing in a Thong or a people train led by Birdy going through the public beach road and people joining in. Even more impressive than the hotel with all those pools, was in the airport when all I could see was Med Soul wrist bands and tired people still with a smile on their faces, but Easy jet next year guys to Barcelona, as rip off airways you know who I mean, take the piss with the over weight luggage thing. So to summarise MED SOUL came to LLORET DE MAR and left with the respect of the town, so well done al. I am off to another holiday in intensive care now, so don’t forget the Med Soul reunion party on SAT OCT 20th @ SOUL IN THE CITY @ our new club--- INDUSTRY---8pm—3am @ 1 curtain rd, Shoreditch, EC2A 3JX, £5 all night for Med Soul Group. Plus come and see djs Jim the’ Thong’ Jackson, Steve day and Little Stevie @ bar 12, comet way, Hatfield, Herts, AL10 9TF.

what a good time we´ve been partying so hard along with the others that soulboys and reality of the politics of England have pailed into insignificance. I notice its quiet does it mean all the biggest posters/troublesome are here or the nameless haven´t got anyone to have a dig at i´m not sure. well its the last night and what a sucsess it has been, the locals have been converted to soul and we have only just fell short of being handed the key to the town. mainly because our cocktail abuse has funded both local schools and the hospital. the beach parties no doubt will appear on utube unfortunately we failed to capture the moment when birdy suddenly realised the cocktails were more potent than expected and he fell a over t after trying in vain to show us his impression of a windmill. some fantastic sets and a great buzz. we have a multicultural group with lots of new foreign soulboys and girls. We even had a frosty anthems set last night albiet by proxy. were off to the club soon for our last night so until we come back and the aspertions, lies and mud slinging resume i´m going to get hayzered

at 22:35:59 Thursday September 20 2007For anyone on this forum who knew him, from the Norfolk Village or The 100 club maybe, Jim Demetriou passed away today. A nicer man you will not meet. A very sad day indeed. It is with deep regret that I have to inform Soul Source members of the passing of Soulcast's Jim Demetriou. Jim, who ran and broadcast his online soul shows for a number of years, passed away today, Wednesday 19th September 2007, around 6:30pm. Jim had been battling against cancer for so many years. At the beginning of this year, with his condition worsening, and with hopes pinned on the advances in medical science, he underwent a stem cell transplant. This, it was hoped, would send his cancer into remission. It was a risky and traumatic process, but one he could not avoid. However, the process was perhaps even more taxing than even Jim had expected and over the months he grew weaker. The last few weeks his condition deteriorated and he had to go back into hospital. I don't know any real details as yet, I received a phone call from his brother Chris, this evening and, well, couldn't quite take it all in. Beyond Soulcast, Jim was, with out a doubt, an exceptional man. He never had an axe to grind, didn't have a bad word to say about anyone and, even through his illness, always had an optimistic view of the world. Spiritually honest and with a great force of integrity, he believed that the world was intrinsically good and was there to be enjoyed. He was one of the life's few genuine nice guys. Having been fortunate to have had him as a best friend for just over 20 years, I will miss him – I already do and I know that so many others will too. If as and when I have any more information I'll post it. Likewise, if others have more than my sketchy details to offer, please do so. Russell Gilbert

Day 1, showed us all meeting up in the bar at staggered times and in varied degrees of drunkeness and as the night carried on to the early hours the participants drink levels evened up till all were absoloutly hammered. not one bad tune. in the event of a fire give me drink and a set of decks. day 2 we were introduced to the beach bar and the biggest cocktails you have ever seen even ash had trouble fitting it in his mouth. after 7 hours not one person walked in a straight line. the suprise of the day was when jim jackson reavealed why he asked for anne summers vouchers for christmas as he demonstrated why he has changed his name to DJ thong. it was like the caister bbq set but with good music, cheap drink, good weather and to boot the promoter allowed us to flyer it, then it was back to the night club til 5am. day 3 The pool party was a real pool party and not just some DJ thrown unwhittingly into a situation he didn´t want to be in playing to 3 people swimming lengths. the pool bar was a swim up. fantastic. day 4 it was the boat party lots of people would worry about being left on a boats for 4 hours, with alcohol , Ash Selector and a wide expance of water with which to dump the body. but what a fantastic day free drink, free food and GOOD music. moored in a cove of beauty and swimming in the blue sea was a free extra. for the women two amature (imature maybe) strippers i won´t reveal thier names but one didn´t get out of boot camp on the x factor and the other revealed a pink elephant not only had a small trunk but had used some of his vouchers. getting off the boat was the hardest task it involved walking straight. fall girl christy again showed why her mother refused to give her sharp objects as a child. so far so good i´ll keep you posted

Bobby Byrd (August 15, 1934 - September 12, 2007) was an African American funk/soul/R&B/gospel musician and songwriter, best known as James Brown's longtime sideman and co-vocalist on songs such as Licking Stick - Licking Stick, Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine and Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved. Byrd also recorded many solo funk tracks, most famously I Know You Got Soul (1971), which have been sampled by musicians including Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, Ice Cube, LL Cool J and A Tribe Called Quest. He was the original leader and founder of The Famous Flames, the vocal group with which James Brown first became famous. Byrd is actually the man who discovered James Brown. Bobby Byrd and James Brown met in a Georgia youth detention facility. Brown was an inmate, Byrd was not. Byrd's local baseball team played the prison team of which Brown was a member. It was Bobby Byrd's family that sponsored his release and took him in afterwards. Byrd was leader of a vocal group called The Avons when Brown joined in the mid-1950s. The Avons later became The Flames, then The Famous Flames, before they were repackaged with Brown as the frontman. James Brown and the Famous Flames, with Byrd as a member, recorded many hit songs, including Please, Please, Please, Think, Bewildered, Oh Baby, Don't You Weep, I'll Go Crazy, and many more. Brown and The Flames were also known for their powerful on stage performances across the United States in venues such as the Apollo Theatre in New York, the Regal in Chicago,and The Royal Theatre in Baltimore (where they recorded the 1964 Top 10 Pop live album "Pure Dynamite: Live at the Royal}, among numerous other concert venues, and on film in the 1964 concert film the T.A.M.I. Show, where Brown, Byrd, and the other Famous Flames (Bobby Bennett and "Baby Lloyd" Stallworth) upstaged The Rolling Stones. Byrd also appeared with Brown and the group in the 1965 Frankie Avalon motion picture Ski Party, Dick Clark's American Bandstand, and twice on The Ed Sullivan Show. Byrd was the only member of The Flames to remain with Brown when the group disbanded in 1968. He was married to soul singer Vicki Anderson, another James Brown collaborator. His step-daughter is Carleen Anderson. In October 2004 Bobby Byrd's songs I Know You Got Soul and Hot Pants were featured on the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas soundtrack, playing on fictional radio station Master Sounds 98.3. Also, in September 2005 his song Try It Again appeared on the soundtrack of Indigo Prophecy. On September 12th 2007, comforted by Vicki Anderson and a large, close family, Byrd lost his long fight with cancer, he was 73.

12 2007And another music legend passes on.....Joe Zawinul died of cancer early Tuesday morning. He was 75. 'What came to be called jazz-rock fusion drew howls of protest from purists. But it also drew praise from others for broadening the audience for jazz. In the 1960s, playing in Cannonball Adderley's band, Zawinul penned his first hit: "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." Pianist Herbie Hancock became friends with Zawinul right around the time Adderley's quintet recorded that tune. He says the composition surprised him. "For a white Viennese boy to write a tune that's that black is pretty remarkable," Hancock says. "He just captured the essence of the African-American heritage, just the statement of melody and feeling of that song. Clearly, in some past life, Joe must've been black." Zawinul may have had the instincts of a jazz musician, but he also worked at it. He came from a poor Viennese family. His twin brother died when he was 4. He learned to play the accordion when he was 6, was accepted in the Vienna Conservatory and wound up at Boston's Berklee College of Music in 1958. He didn't stay long: He was hired away by Maynard Ferguson, landed a job with singer Dinah Washington, and then joined Adderley's group. Eventually, Zawinul wanted to find his own sound. The electric keyboard he used on "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" pointed toward his future. He went on to compose "In A Silent Way," the title track for one of Miles Davis' earliest experiments in electronics. In 1970, Zawinul, with saxophonist Wayne Shorter, founded Weather Report, a group that had a dramatic impact on jazz. The band stormed concert halls at a time when rock had driven mainstream jazz to the margins. Alex Acuna played percussion with the band. He says Shorter and Zawinul had a specific vision about where they wanted to go with their music. "The vision was to make a band that makes music with all the sounds that the world generates," Acuna says. Acuna stayed close to Joe Zawinul over the years, and also played with Zawinul in his later group, the Joe Zawinul Syndicate. Acuna says Zawinul was a big fan of sports, especially boxing. He had a reputation for being gruff, but Acuna says he was just honest and direct. And musically, he didn't like to repeat himself'

Here in the UK, Willie was best known for his solo outings "Walking Up a One Way Street, "Thank You John" (both massive mod club hits), his NS scene anthems "First Taste of Hurt", "Teasin You", "Teasin You Again" (+ a couple of his later cuts for United Artists & Capitol) AND with funk fans for the Gaturs outings. He toured here playing both funk & NS scene clubs and I got to meet him twice. He was a truly modest guy with a great extended family. .....The posting (on a blues list) that announced his passing..... Keyboardist, songwriter and producer Wilson "Willie Tee" Turbinton, an early architect of New Orleans funk and soul, died today of colon cancer. He was 63. Mr. Turbinton secured his place in New Orleans music legend by producing and co-writing the Wild Magnolias' self-titled 1973 debut. That landmark recording and the subsequent "They Call Us Wild," also produced by Mr. Turbinton, largely introduced the Mardi Gras Indians' distinctive street beats and chants to the world. "In a city of treasures, he was rich in taste and tradition," said record producer and longtime friend Leo Sacks. "The depth, breadth, scope and command of his piano playing were profound. He helped shape the sound of New Orleans for more than four decades." Mr. Turbinton's passing follows that of his older brother, modern jazz saxophonist Earl Turbinton, on Aug. 3. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Martin Turbinton; a sister, Joyce Turbinton Gill; a daughter, Racquel Turbinton Bruno; and two grandchildren. A funeral is scheduled for Sept. 22 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m., with a service to follow.

Got this from Angie this morning: Council tax re-valuers want to charge us more if we live in a nice area. That ought to mean discounts for those of us who live in rough areas. We have a huge council house at the end of our street. A grumpy old woman with a pack of fierce dogs runs the extended family that lives there. Her car isn't taxed or insured, and doesn't even have a number plate, but the police still do nothing. Her bad tempered old man is Famous for upsetting foreigners with his racist comments. A shopkeeper blames him for ordering the murder of his son and his son's girlfriend, but nothing has been proved yet. All the kids have broken marriages except the youngest, who everyone thought was gay. Two grandsons are meant to be in the Army but are always seen out in nightclubs. Wednesday September 12 2007Fergie gets battered.....A crazed attacker launched a brutal assault on Sir Alex Ferguson as he stepped off a train, it was revealed yesterday. The Manchester United boss was repeatedly kicked between the legs and punched by the complete stranger who was yelling football-related abuse. Shocked Sir Alex was left winded and crouching in agony as the thug fled down the platform. A witness said: "Sir Alex was taken by surprise. A man shouted very unpleasant things as he appeared from nowhere and began throwing punches and kicks. "It was all over very quickly but he connected with a few painful kicks between the legs. It was shocking and upsetting for Sir Alex but he is a real trouper and was back on his feet before long." Sir Alex, 65, was given a hot cup of tea as he took a few minutes to recover. The assault - seen by dozens of horrified passengers - took place as Sir Alex got off the Manchester train at Euston station in central London on Monday. Friends travelling with him immediately called for help and police caught the attacker as he tried to get away. An officer giving chase was punched several times in the head as he tussled with the man. British Transport Police said: "Two people were assaulted at Euston at 4.15pm on Monday. BTP officers arrested a man who is currently in custody." Sir Alex, who did not need hospital treatment, was on his way to represent the Society for Multiple Sclerosis at a charity event organised by City traders to commemorate the 9/11 terror attacks. A Manchester United spokesman said: "There was some sort of altercation. Sir Alex was kicked. Someone was taken away. Sir Alex was in London for a function which he successfully attended. "Someone else was also assaulted. The attacker was not known to Sir Alex or any of the party." Scotland Yard said last night that a 43-year-old white male had been charged with ABH, common assault, and a public order offence relating to racial aggravation. He will appear in court this morning.

Dear all, I just got the news from my dear friend and publisher Thomas Glagow that Joe passed away last night. Eric, his son just called to inform him. Joe was 75. I am shocked as he seemed on such good form when I saw him at the North Sea Jazz festival a couple of months ago. I will never forget seeing him for the first time on the Heavy Weather Tour at the Rainbow theatre in Finsbury park with Jaco, Alex, Manolo and Wayne. It left a big impression. Such is the legacy of the man that I know that I (50) will miss him, my 30 year old son will miss him, my 10 year old daughter will miss him. His composition "Birdland" won 3 Grammies in 3 decades with 3 different versions (Weather Report, Manhattan Transfer and Quincy Jones) Joe played a big show in Hungary before he had been hospitalised. Joe died in a Vienna hospital early today. Zawinul won widespread acclaim for his keyboard work on chart-topping Davis albums such as ''In A Silent Way'' and ''Bitches Brew,'' and was a leading force behind the so-called ''Electric Jazz'' movement. Why is then that good soul/jazz/modern events dont have people flying outside other clubs .Answer don't need too, if an event is good people will go back and the event then gets a good reputation amongst the soul crowd, word of mouth etc there is a thing of too much exposure at times

Actually Swat and Biggsy my name is Les (Leslie, but not gendarmes I am just on holiday for two weeks in France at the moment with some mates so that seemed appropriate and I dont want to get in a cat fight like poor old Ali and Marky ended up in) Interestingly Bigger still refuses to say why he is not now doing Med Soul, but thats by the by, what he said that was "misleading" is that he has not heard Hilly and Simon at Lacy complain about RD. Well Hilly barred RD from the Lacy for flyering and they moan about it all the time. I was there on Saturday until almost the end (had to leave to get Le shuttle at 2.30) and they were moaning like fuck earlier on that RD might turn up again. When I left there was no-one flying though. I can see the sense of flying Lakeside and Bluewater and hitting new punters to build a new night but I am less than convinced that promoters dont mind you flying their nights. Like you say everyone starts somewhere but I cant see that Southport, Lacy, Caister STARTED just by flying other peoples nights. They must have done a lot more than that. perhaps its time for Dave and others to get out and work at it looking for new punters as it seems flying others peoples nights and constant barrage of repetitive plugs (AK SOTR) on this website does piss off the regulars a bit.

have the at 14:19:16 Monday September 3 2007 ditch bar seen sense at last and kicked you out.140 thats not many on numbers is it.------Why would the ditch bar kick me out when we have had 13 gigs that have been well atended?.The ditch bar has no beer on tap,not much parking and arsey staff of late and i want a better club, which INDUSTRY is,so is that ok with you.As for 140 punters for MED SOUL most of the people coming i know and it will be a great laugh,and the hotel is booked for next year ready, so if we have 140 happy people this year i think it will be more next year,we have djs such as PERRY LOUIS from the JAZZ CAFE coming next year with all his jazz dancers,Bigger will be there and a lot more, but even if they don't MED SOUL will work because i have stayed at the resort and its the nuts.As for flyering events when i started the soul night at the CIRCUS TAVERN it was flyered by CAISTER and me and SCOTT walked arround LAKESIDE car parks putting flyers on cars for CAISTER and that is a huge event,it makes my gigs look a joke as far as numbers go,but did the first CAISTER have 3000 people go? i don't think so!.The JAZZ CAFE are flyered with gigs on in the FORUM, MINISTRY OF SOUND,KO KO etc and thease clubs have 2000+ punters in them but they still flyer other clubs.So if you want to promote a Soul night would you go to a club in wales that played ROCK, or would you go to a club that played simular music,not to far away, with people that liked simular music that have the choice to go some where new for a change, but if it is on a different night they will still go to the club they got a flyer at.I don't think a punter only goes to one club his whole life, and the lacy is packed so if i am stealing all their punters why isn't the Lacy empty now and my club should have 900 then INSTEAD OF 250--300 WHICH WE HAVE before you start.Do you think your sad litle knocks will stop people going to the events i put on,i think people make up thier own minds don't you, and say what you like i will still put them on,why because i want to end of and people will still go,why because they can.Look at this site now MED SOUL and DITCH BAR, good or bad its nearly on every posting,so you are just promiting it even more and when you get big name djs such as BIGGER defending what i do that to me makes it worth while,fuck the money,which is why all this crap is on here in the first place,other promoters and djs shit stiring so they think they will get rid of the competion and have it all,but i have news for you, people choose where they go and if they come back,if my gigs are shit people won't go or won't come back,but they do go and they do come back. Just thought I thought I should clear a few things up for Les Gendarmes. Firstly you can put on a million gigs on the same night or in the same area as the Lacy and you will never effect it, you wont dilute it, why because the majority of people like it, simple as. There has been many nights come and go and the Lacy still has a full house. I never said that RD gets his clubbers only from existing clubs I pointed out how hard he works, lease remember we all had to start somewhere. The funny thing is with all the other gigs on it seems that its mainly RD that gets most of the stick on here re diluting clubs etc. I have never heard Simon or Chris moan about flyering the gig, I have heard the club owner moan about him and his staff having to clear up the flyers after the event. Re the established events I ask you how did they get packed in the first place, those punters attended somewhere before they came to these nights or events. I still have my crew flyer the Lacy at Southport, Alex has never said a thing he even lets us put the flyer in his flyer packs and next to his programmes in the racks. My crew also flyer Southport throughout the UK and I have my own universal flyer with various dates I am playing at on it that I give out all the nights I do. So yes the bigger events still flyer and promote their gigs. Finally folks unless I’m mistaken and I stand corrected if I am wrong but I haven’t actually seen anyone that has paid for soul med actually moan about who or what djs are going to the event. It seems as I said the nameless idiots that are doing it. I don’t need to give anyone a reason why I will not be at Soul Med, especially someone who doesn’t even have the decency to name themselves, anyone who comes to my gigs knows that I never pull out of anything without good reason and I can assure you that it is without any animosity on either part.

So why aren`t you doing med soul then Bigger? you are on the flyer. I think the biggest problem is one that Bigger did not admit to below, that there are simply not enough punters out there to support any more events. It is all well and good the likes of RD putting on more events but where are the extra people coming from... according to Bigger they are coming from the exisitng clubs he is working at as he sees Dave outside all of them flyering. So all you are doing is diluting an already limited market and getting Chris Hill and Simons back up by standing outside their club trying to nick their punters. It appears RD did the same to caister from what has been written. Wouldnt it be better if these people wanted to start new nights and new events if they went out and found new punters for themselves? After all Southport, The Lacies, caister had to start from scratch and build their crowd. Why cant RD and any other newcomers do this? Then they might not get as much stick as they do.

Do you know what there are some nasty, bitchy people on this site and in the soul scene in general. All those sad no spineless wankers that post vendictive comments without naming themselves should be barred from this forum. To be honest that is why I prefer the EMS site coz if you do that kind of shit you get struck off, yet there is still good adult debate on there without none of the stupid, nastyness. You can say what you want about Dave, Soul Med, The Ditch Bar ETC if you actually have the guts to put your name up and enter into a constructive debate. What the no name wankers offer to the soul scene is fuck all. It isnt constructive, it doesnt help the music we love or the scene in general. You might not like Dave as a person, you might not like it because he bites when people right vendictive things about him he bites and you might even be jealous of him. But the one thing you cant argue about is that he works his nuts off trying to promote his gigs whatever they maybe, probably harder than any other promoter. I have played several gigs on a weekend other a weekend locally and he has been outside them all. What does it matter if there is 40, 140 or 1400 people going to soul med as long as people have a good time. Yep he maybe moving the gig from the Ditch Bar but he will be back somewhere in another venue, why because hes making millions out of his gigs, err no. Because he actually loves the music and the scene and he tries to put on good gigs for people that love the scene, something the nameless wankers will never understand. I wont be at Soul Med, its not because im working and its not because i havent got 10 people going. But i for one hope and wish that Dave, the DJs, the punters all have an amazing time in the sun and hopefully i will be there with u next year. As I have said before events and gigs such as Southport, The Lacy, Luxury Soul, Caister etc are all excellent events that pull huge crowds for whatever reason to them. There is still room for events such as Soul Med,Soulvillage etc to grow side by side with these events, without either being effected. The thing is the new events need the support probaly more than the big events. But neither the Big Events or the Newer Events deserves the kind of bollocks the no name wankers right up on this site. They were last seen on a Med Soul flyer, which claimed they were appearing at a 4* hotel in a spanish holiday resort. A spokesman was unable to explain their disappearance from the planned event. Thanks to all for a great night down at Henry's for the QDOS gig. DJ Ron Carroll from Chicago was rocking the front room. Brill to see DJs Ian and Rob in the backroom - great tunz boyz! Have not seen them for a while and as always they delivered the goods. The backroom was a bit flat due to the front room but all the DJs seen done a professional job-the quality of a good dj is to play the best even to a few.Have a fab weekend all!!!!
